Start a club at school
Set up a "get active" club with your friends. Here is a checklist to get you started:
- Choose what type of activities you'd like to do.
- Check out what equipment is available and write down what you'll need.
- Find out where you could do the activities (inside, on the oval).
- Talk with a teacher about your ideas (find out if supervision is required, the best time for the club, who the club is for and the maximum number of members you could include).
Walk and talk
Instead of sitting down and talking at lunch time, try walking around the school grounds or around the oval while chatting. It's a great way to relax and catch up on all the latest news.
Mini-tournaments
If you like team games, get together and organise a mini-tournament. You could:
- run the tournament over a week or few weeks;
- play games with small teams, such as three-on-three basketball;
- organise school house groups to compete against the teachers; and
- find out if you are able to use any of your school's equipment.
Dance it up
Work out a routine to show the rest of your class or work with the Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) and teachers to arrange a school dance. This is a great way to be active, and can even be used to raise money for your favourite school project.
Try a new activity
Encourage your school to have a day where staff and students can try out new physical activities. Put together a plan with some friends and ask one of the teachers to help you put it into action.
Theme days
Organise a number of "get active" theme days. Click here for a list of ideas.
More things to do at school
The Department of Local Government, Sport and Recreation has a number of programs your school may be interested in or even be already involved in. Check them out and tell your teachers and parents all about them!
You can also read more ideas about ways to get active with your friends or on your own.
So, get active and have fun.
