Join a club

If you'd like to play team sports or fixtures, check out your local clubs.

If you'd prefer individual activities try something like aerobics, dancing, weight training or athletics.

Try contacting one of the sport and recreation organisations for more information about the club nearest you.  Your local paper, library, leisure centre or community centre are also good sources of information about local clubs.

If you live in Brisbane visit the Brisbane City Council's website to find out all about Brisbane clubs and getting active in Brisbane.

Walk or ride to school clubs

Walking or cycling to school is an excellent way of getting active. It's also a great way to meet friends and catch up on news.

Some schools have started up "Walk to School" clubs with adults leading the way. You could start a class project by contacting local road safety consultants who can help your school to develop Safe Walking and Pedalling programs. There may even be some funding available. Visit the Roadsafety website and search for "education and resources".

The Queensland Transport website also has some great information to help you out.

Some safety tips

  • Make sure drivers can see you. Wear a reflective top, strip or badge and something that is light coloured (on top of your uniform if needed).
  • Walk/cycle with friends.
  • Choose routes that are well-lit if travelling in the early morning or in the evening and well-used by other people.
  • Ask your parents for advice and let them know the way you will be going.
  • Choose the best places to cross roads. Use a proper crossing where possible.
  • Always wear a helmet if you are cycling.
  • Use a backpack to carry all your things, and wear it properly. It's much easier and it's better for your back too.
