How active are you?

Did you know many children are only active for about half an hour a day, most days of the week?

How active should I be?

To stay healthy and happy you should try and be active for one hour every day.  Try to do one hour of moderately intense activity each day.

This means doing an activity that makes you warm and makes you breathe heavier than usual.

More energetic activity is fine as long as you feel okay and are still able to talk while you are exercising.

If you can't talk while being active, you are probably working to hard.

Do I have to do a full hour each day?

You don't have to do one hour all in one go.  You can break it into chunks.  You could do:

  • 10 minutes walking to school;
  • 20 minutes basketball at lunchtime;
  • 10 minutes walking home from school; and
  • 20 minutes dancing around your room to your favourite music!

How does getting active help me?

Getting active:

  • helps your body grow;
  • keeps your body healthy;
  • helps prevent you from getting hurt when you play sport; and
  • helps you to lead a longer, more enjoyable life.

Also try to get a good night's sleep (about eight to 10 hours if you can), eat plenty of fruit and vegetables and drink lots of water.

Most of all, enjoy what you do and have fun!

What if I have a disability?

Having a disability won't stop you from being active.

In fact, there are very few disabilities that completely stop people getting active.  So why not try:

  • adapting a sport or activity to suit your needs;
  • joining a fitness centre that can design a program to help you reach your goals; or
  • joining a sporting group designed for people with a disability. 

    The Sporting Wheelies and Disabled Sport and Recreation Association has information about sport, recreation, arts, fitness and adventure activities for people with disabilities.
